SkyWay Runners

SkyWay entered six runners in this year’s ACSIS 10k fun run. SkyWay peer coach Lee Flavin, youth worker Tipi Welsh, reparations project worker Penny Munday and our operations and resources coordinator Rebecca Holland ran alongside three volunteers: Vanessa, Tim and Max.  The run took place on Sunday 11th July on the streets of central London with SkyWay staff on hand to cheer on the runners and document the event. Thankfully, all of the SkyWay runners managed to cross the finish line before the streets were reopened. Lee was the fastest, managing to complete the run with a highly respectable time of 52 minutes, Penny, Tipi and Vanessa made it over the finishing line in 1 hour and 7 minutes, Bex and Max weren’t far behind clocking in at 1 hour and 15 minutes and Tim came in with a time of 1 hour and 20 minutes.

All the runners taking part were sponsored and we are hoping to raise £3000 on behalf of SkyWay. If you are interested in making a contribution then click here to donate online. All donations are greatly appreciated and help SkyWay carry on the vital work we do in the local community.

SkyWay will be taking part in ASCIS run over the next two years with seven places in next year’s run already reserved.

If you are interested in taking part contact Ebony on ebony@skyway.uk.com or call the office on 020 7729 6970.

The 9th consecutive Teenage Kicks (TK) tournament will be taking place this summer, for one day only, on Friday 13th August at Haggerston Park between 1.00pm-8.00pm on the astro-turf pitch.

Registration is now open for teams wanting to compete. This year there will be 4 categories for boys: under 12's, under 14's, under 16's and under 19's and 2 categories for girls: under 14's and under 19's.

If you are interested in registering a team to compete, then email Toks at toks@skyway.uk.com or call the SkyWay office on 0207 729 6970.

In the last four years SkyWay has been recruiting volunteer Event Managers to assist with the organisation of TK. This year five more have been taken on with two Event Managers from previous years acting as mentors, supporting them through the programme and ensuring they get the most out of the experience.

Reparations Project

SkyWay has been awarded a Reparations contract by the Youth Offending Team (YOT) and Team Hackney. Young people on Reparation Orders will be referred to SkyWay by the YOT, to carry out a range of work experience. As part of the process it will be the responsibility of SkyWay staff  to arrange additional training and experience as required  with a view to helping them  into long term education, training or employment.

SkyWay has already started building up a database of host organisations willing to offer work experience to young people including: Calibre Minds, The Crib, Hackney Parks, Clean Waterways and many more. Below are some pictures of a group of young people working with Clean Waterways to remove debris from Regents Canal:

All kitted out and ready to start work on the canal cleanup.

Young people and reparation project workers Daniel and Penny posing with what they managed to fish out of Regents Canal - not bad for a morning's work!

We are still looking for organisations that are interested in hosting  young people. If you are interested or know of someone who might be then email Daniel Mussie on daniel@skyway.uk.com or call the office on 020 7729 6970.Volunteer mentors and supervisors are required to work on a one to one basis with young people on the project.

If you are interested in volunteering as a mentor/supervisor on the Reparations Project then contact Richard on richard@skyway.uk.com or 020 7729 6970.

Elevate

Virtual Life

Three young men from Woodberry Down have got together with their detached youth workers (Tania and Julia) to plan the Virtual Life project, the highlight of which will be a residential experience for fourteen young people to stay in cabins in the New Forest at the end of August. They said this of the project:

“[The project is needed] to bring friendships together, to help us interact with other people and also improve our cooking skills and life skills. We would enjoy being all together, doing activities and coming out of Hackney, going to the countryside and relaxing.”

They say the project will build the following skills:

“friendship skills, survival, sharing food, cooking food, budgeting, health & safety and planning.”

They successfully applied for funding for this project from the Youth Opportunity Fund, including attending a YOF panel and answering questions about their project.

Faces of Hackney

A group of young people from Jack Watts estate got together to make a book about life in Hackney as a young person, addressing stereotypes and putting their own points across using their own language. Have a look at an online version of the book below:

One young person commented:

“Overall throughout the whole project making the book and the residential trip I have found it really great. Emma and Tania have been wonderful to me and the whole project has helped me learn even more and about the area I live in.”

Young Residents Come Together

Young people from four north Hackney estates are enjoying a project jointly planned by Elevate@Skyway and their Tenant Resident Associations. So far they have taken part in trips to Old MacDonalds Farm and Southend, and had fun with photography and cooking every Wednesday at Lea View hall, culminating in a photography exhibition with food prepared by the cooking group. The estates involved are Lea View, Webb, Keir Hardie and High Hill. Parents and older teenagers have got involved to help out. One of the young people said:

“I like the cooking because it doesn’t matter if it’s messy.” Another said, “I liked meeting new friends and seeing old friends.” And a parent commented, “My daughter really enjoyed herself, it gives her something to do and she doesn’t want it to stop … you can see the difference in her.

Here are some pictures from the evening:

Volunteering opportunities at SkyWay

Volunteers are essential to the work done by SkyWay. We are still looking to recruit people to act as stewards for this summer’s Teenage Kicks and mentors to help support the young people referred to us through the reparations project.

If you are interested in either of these opportunities, then contact Richard via email at: richard@skyway.uk.com, or call the SkyWay office on 0207 729 6970 for more details on how to apply.

The Shoreditch Youth Network (SYN) is looking to recruit two volunteers, though one person may feel they have the ability to combine the two roles. For more information click here or email gail@skyway.uk.com.
