Do you have what it takes to be a Leader and take on responsibility and lead others?You may start as Leader, progress to a Volunteer and then move forward to become a Peer Worker.
Young Leaders or Street Leaders have been identified by staff, volunteers or their peers as having a number of qualities which go towards being seen as a natural leader, these include: initiative, taking on responsibility, being able to influence others, able to focus on and achieve goals, work well in a group.
You will be encouraged to think about yourself as a leader and help influence and motivate other young people that you know.
As a volunteer you will have good leadership skills, or have been suggested to become a volunteer by others. You can choose to volunteer in a particular area of expertise or on a particular programme on a short or long term basis.
To enrol in the Peer Programme you will be required to go through a recruitment process to join the six month programme. To apply, you will have demonstrated a number of qualities over a period of time; including good leadership skills, regular volunteering, a commitment to SkyWay or other voluntary organisations, show evidence of working towards qualifications in your chosen area of expertise.
The programme is designed to support you to gain a range of employability skills.
All Peers on the programme will attend ongoing training and support throughout the six months of the programme. Training will be in groups and individually delivered to reflect your needs and you will all be expected to work towards a BTEC level 2 qualification in Peer Education.
Programme Plan:
In months 1 and 2 you will gain experience through volunteering to run sessions in your area of expertise.
In months 3, 4 and 5 you will gain experience on a work placement in the community, whilst receiving a training bursary
In month 6 you will be referred to the Enterprise SkyWay Agency where you will be placed in paid employment for a one month period.
At the end of the six months you will have the following options subject to availability and if you have completed the Peer Programme to a satisfactory level.
Become a Peer to Peer trainer for ‘Peer Pressure’ delivering sessional training to schools, youth clubs and other youth organisations.
